Going, Going, Going!

It’s been one hell of a week, and the week before was equally as hectic (hence the blog going from weekly to bi-weekly).
Why was it so hectic and crazy? Answer: Presentations for Assignment 1 for my architecture studio course.
The week before last week consisted of my classmates and I scrambling in the occasionally panic to finish up the projects we had been working on since the beginning of the semester: the 6x6x6 meter cube building to house a piece of artwork from the Glyptotek/New Carlsberg Museum. For most of us, that meant making sure we had all of our drawings done, had our layouts and boards finished and ready for last Monday’s printing, and finishing out 1:50 models. For some of us, it was only one or two of those tasks, but for others, like myself, it was all of them. Professor scrapped my finished board the Friday before it was due for printing (two days) which meant I was going to have a working weekend.
The highlight of the weekend was definitely the nice weather. Yes, I was in the studio Saturday and Sunday for a couple hours, successfully finishing my work, but it was a lot easier to do when the sun was shining in through the windows of the studio making the atmosphere cheery. In fact, there was so much sun that my classmates and I got extremely sweaty from working, thus prompting us to head over to the harbor for a dip after we were done working.
The weather is a little different here in Copenhagen than it is back at home. The past two days have been rainy and cold, unlike at home where I’ve heard its been in the 80s. Isaiah had warned me before we jumped into the harbor that day, that if it was anything like how it was when he was there two days ago, it was going to be cold. I shrugged it off, I’ve swam in cold water before.
Well, the harbor water was F R E E Z I N G.
We didn’t stay in too long because of how cold it was, but climbing out afterwards and basking in the sun for a couple of minutes before we headed back was heavenly. There were also a bunch of tiny jellyfish floating by where we swam. I am still under the assumption that they are harmless. I could be right, I could be wrong. The harbor is pretty much unswayable temperature-wise at this point, for me. I’ll have to find somewhere else to swim.
All and all, the boards, drawings and models were done by Monday morning, and all the boards were successfully printed. For the hard work our class put in over that weekend, we were rewarded with a day of no studio on Tuesday (no 4-hour class). So, Isaiah, Mika and I decided to head over to the Design Museum and spend a couple of hours there. It was a well spent, good day off. We needed it.

I also had the opportunity to make my floor's weekly Hygge dinner! What's Hygge? Think of a hang out with your friends. Think of everyone wrapped in blankets, sitting on your couch at home, watching a movie together on Friday night, talking quietly amongst yourselves with steaming mugs of hot chocolate. Hygge is all of that, but it’s also so much more. Many Danes have told me the reason that Americans can’t fully understand the concept of hygge is because they can’t stop for a second of their day and be completely in the moment, relaxed, without a single worry in the world.
Once a week, my floor gets together to have a nice dinner, made by three people who live on the floor. It's a nice way to reconnect as we don't always see each other during the week with our busy schedules. Plus, its a free meal. On Tuesday, my floor mate, Maggie, and I made a Quinoa, Potato, Tomato, Spinach curry. It was delish, easy to make, and we had no left overs much to the disappointment of everyone on my floor. It's definitely a recipe I'll be trying when I get home.

I woke up Wednesday morning at 7:00am (after a sleepless, worry-filled, anxious night) to arrive at the studio for 8:00am. Wednesday was the day we had two visiting architects come in to critique our class’s work. We critiqued from 9:00am to 3:00pm, with a short lunch break in between. It was really cool to see everyone’s projects. Even though we all have been working in the same room and talking for the past month and a half, it was great to really hear the whole story of their projects. With the presentations behind me, I had a wonderful night’s sleep that night.
Thursday was easy. I had coffee/hot chocolate with my Danish friend, Peter, in the morning before heading off to my writing class in the afternoon where, over tea, coffee and sweets, we workshopped our drafts for our first graded paper. The rest of the afternoon was easy, setting me up for a very fun Friday.
Friday was the day all of the studios (architecture, graphic design, urban design, furniture design) had their exhibition. All of the different studio classes set up their studio with their projects on display, and everyone traveled through all of the different studio. This meant that everyone got to see all the different projects that the other studios did. They ranged from designing chairs and making pavilions to making a deck of cards, and even designing a house for a blind person. Overall, it was an eye opening experience and I can’t wait until our next exhibition.
Before we started the exhibition, my studio took a short field trip to the Copenhagen armory and got to see all this tiny (they weren’t that tiny) models of different navy ships. I was intrigued.
It was a really good way to end a crazy week, especially because I knew I was going to have the building pretty much to myself for the weekend, seeing as though 90% of the people in my building ended up going to Germany for Oktoberfest. I was here with four or five other people for the entire weekend. It was so quiet, I slept fantastically, and I got to DEEP CLEAN THE ENTIRE KITCHEN, NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE!
Everyone left their dirty dishes in the sink and I refused to live in the filth for the weekend. So after I made myself a delicious dinner, I cleaned the kitchen, scrubbed the counters, emptied the trash, and put the dishes up before settling in for a movie. I was pretty proud of myself. I even decided to clean my entire room too, refolded all of my clothes, attempted to organize my desk, and swept the floor.
Having the kitchen pretty much to myself this weekend, I took out all the stops with food.
Friday night, I made myself salmon pan cooked in butter and soy sauce, rice and tomatoes.

Saturday morning, I made myself avocado toast with tomatoes, slices of nectarine, and two eggs (which I unfortunately destroyed).

Saturday night, I started losing my creativity and made rice with tiki chicken masala.

And this morning, I made myself whatever-you-call-eggs-in-bread, and slices of nectarine.

Its fair to say I ate pretty well this weekend.
I'm looking forward to the week ahead. Tomorrow, my watercolor painting class is going to the harbor to paint in the afternoon (hopefully it isn’t raining), and Tuesday, my studio is taking a trip to the site of our next project. It’s my last week of classes before I get a week off for the first round of long study tours. I will not be traveling on study tour that week, so I’ll be here in Copenhagen relaxing, and then flying to London at the end of the week to visit my friend who is studying abroad there.
So, until next time! Thank you to those who are keeping up with my adventures :)
Best,
Lilly
